Replace, Reface or Refurbish Your Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchens are the heart of the home. And, as a result, they must withstand a lot of heavy work and traffic. Over time, they can start to look a bit tired, old, and dated – especially as trends change. One way to breathe life into a kitchen and transform it into a fresh, new space is to change your cabinets. But what’s the best option? Should they be replaced, refaced or refurbished?

  • Replacing Your Kitchen Cabinets

This is the most drastic option. It should only be considered if you want to make major changes to the design of your space. It is a good idea to replace them if they are damaged, of a very poor quality, or in the event that the carcasses (the shelving and structure) are compromised. Even though this is an expensive and time-consuming job, there are quite a few positives to this option, since you end up with exactly the design you want – no compromises anywhere!

One thing to keep in mind is that this is best done as an entire kitchen remodel. Your new cabinets are likely to be very different in size and shape to your old ones. This may affect where your appliances are positioned, your countertop size and shape, and it may influence your tiling and kitchen backsplash.

  • Refacing Your Kitchen Cabinets

This is a great middle-ground option. “Refacing” means that your kitchen cabinet doors are removed and replaced with updated options. This keeps your kitchen layout and shelving intact, and can be done quickly with minimal labor and hassle. In fact, with the right planning, it’s an easy DIY project.

This is an option that works well if the walls and shelving of your cabinets are in good condition, are undamaged, and are not warped. It can be useful if you are doing a partial renovation as well, if you are making your kitchen open plan or adding in appliances.

  • Repainting Your Kitchen Cabinets

This is a great, budget-friendly way to give your kitchen a facelift! You will be surprised at just how much of a difference a fresh coat of paint makes! You can choose how much of your kitchen cabinet you want to be painted – the whole carcass or just the doors – and there is a wide range of paint colors on offer. Although painting sounds like a simple job, it is recommended that this is done by a professional. Unless, of course, you have the right experience. This is because you will need to use the right type of paint, prepare the surfaces of the cabinets properly, and know how to operate a spray gun. Often, cabinets require 3 coats of paint as well as priming. However, the labor is worth the result.

This technique works best on wood, wood laminate, and even metal cabinets. Unfortunately, laminate and plastic cabinets don’t take paint well. Be sure to remove all doors and drawers, fix any cracks or signs of wear, and clean surfaces well before you start painting. One good tip is to label where each drawer door and drawer goes as you remove them, so that they can go back into the right place.

Design Tips for Remodeling a Small Kitchen

When it comes to having a great kitchen, size is not the most important factor – design is. In fact, with the right design, small kitchens are often far more efficient and enjoyable to use than big ones! Here are some remodeling tips from the specialists in countertop edges to turn your small space into a dream kitchen.

  • Wall-Mounted Pot Racks:

You likely don’t have the space for big, rectangular pot racks hanging from your ceiling, but there are some great alternative storage solutions, including pot racks that mount onto your walls.

  • Wall-Mounted Utensil Storage:

Maximizing counter and cabinet space are essential in small kitchens, so moving those everyday utensils onto the wall near your cooktop keeps them out of the way and handy for when you are cooking. Wall magnets are also a great way of storing your knives, just be sure to mount them out of your kid’s reach.

  • Smart Appliance Storage:

Everyday appliances like toasters, microwaves, mixers, juicers and smoothie makers take up a huge amount of counter space. Instead, install shelving or cabinets where you can access them easily. You can even install plug points inside the cabinets. If you have a kettle, invest in a stovetop option that won’t use a plug point or counter space.

  • Storage, Storage, Storage:

Make the most of the vertical space you have by installing cabinets and shelves all the way to the ceiling. Even if you can’t access the highest shelves without a step ladder, they still make great storage for items you use very infrequently but take up a lot of space.

  • Include A Corner Pantry or Long Cupboard:

It might not sound like a big deal, and you will have to sacrifice some counter space, but this really does add a huge amount of useful space to your kitchen. It is easier for storing your pantry items, additional appliances, and even cleaning equipment. Be sure to put in nice, deep shelves right up to your ceiling.

  • A Breakfast Bar:

If you’re able to knock through and put in a breakfast bar between your kitchen and living space, you won’t regret it. This can have storage on both sides, and with a wide counter you’ll get lots of prep space and your bar stools can slide right underneath it. This is also a fantastic way of adding natural light to your kitchen, and it is more sociable too – you can chat, pour drinks and get help prepping food without tripping over people in the kitchen space itself.

Tips For Creating Your Bathroom Floorplan

Bathrooms can be challenging to remodel because they are small spaces that have to provide a high level of functionality. With so many options for fixtures, furniture, countertops and countertop edge op out there, it can be difficult to visualize exactly what will work best in your home. Here are some tips from our team.

  • Make a movable layout: There are plenty of free online tools that can map out your bathroom and help you space out the different elements you need to include, making it easy to move them around and try different options. If that isn’t your style, you can go more old school and chalk out an outline in, say, your garage, and draw in furnishings to scale. This is very useful in visualizing the space and how you will be able to move around in it.
  • Assessing your needs: Take some time to think about who uses the bathroom and how they use it, to help create a list of goals for your remodel. Is more storage essential? What about a his and hers basin? Do your kids need a shower or a bigger tub? Is it a family bathroom or a smaller en-suite? Is this a space you want to use for many years ahead or are you remodeling to sell in a few years?
  • The tub: This is often the focal point of a bathroom, and many people make the mistake of choosing one that is too big or too small for the space. Your tub shouldn’t make the rest of your room feel cramped, prevent doors opening properly or fit at an awkward angle. Remember, very big tubs also take a very long time to fill, so they aren’t always as practical. Tubs that are too small are not going to enjoyable or practical to use, and will look out of place in your space.
  • Clearance: Being able to move easily inside the bathroom will make all the difference to your new bathroom. You need at least 36 inches for your toilet, 35 inches minimum for a single sink (72 for a double), and at least 60 inches long and 32 inches deep for a standard tub.

Installing a sink in your laminate countertops

Traditional kitchen sinks have to be recessed into your countertop. Here’s some DIY installation advice from specialist manufacturers of laminate countertop edging.

Step One: Plan your sink installation

First, check with your sink manufacturer to see if they will supply a cutting template along with your sink. If they don’t, you can make one yourself by setting the sink face down on the countertop and marking it out with a pencil, making sure the space at the front and back of the sink is even. Then, measure the lip of the sink and mark that inner guide line within your pencil outline.

Note that it’s best to install your faucets and waste to the sink or countertop before the sink is secured in place.

Step Two: Cut the recess hole

Using a drill with an auger or flat bit, drill a hole in each corner of the sink position inside the inner guide line. Keep the drill at a precise right angle to the countertop for accuracy.

Using a jigsaw, cut around the inside guide line, using the corner holes as starting points. Once you have made the hole, rest the sink inside it to see if it fits properly. Once you are happy with the fit, seal the cut edges of the countertop with a preservative primer.

Step Three: Assembly

Remove the sink from the hole and install faucets, waste assembly and overflow as per the instructions from your manufacturer. Once they are installed securely, caulk around the hole in the countertop to seal against moisture, or place the manufacturers gasket or seal around the edge if they have supplied one.

Install the retaining clips around the sink edge and position the sink to ensure that you have enough access to connect the faucets to the water supply. Once you are happy with the position of the sink, tighten the retaining clips and wipe away any access sealant, and connect the faucets.

What makes the perfect countertop?

With so many options for your kitchen countertop, from materials to colors and designs, choosing the right product for your home is a serious challenge. Here are some tips from specialist manufacturers of countertop edges to help make your decision a little easier.

Price and need

These are the two biggest factors in choosing the right kitchen countertop. For example, you may need a countertop that will last a long time and withstand a lot of use, as well as being easy to keep hygienic and in good condition. Your budget, however, will limit how many of your needs can be met and to what extent.

Tips for buying a kitchen countertop

As wonderful as it would be to spend $100,000 on a kitchen remodel, that’s just not an option for most of us, so budgeting for each part of the kitchen is essential. A standby rule is to set aside at least 10% of your budget for the countertops. This will give you a price range that you can work within that will determine if you can afford high-cost materials like marble, medium range materials like granite or Corian, or more affordable countertops like laminate.

Laminate countertops and edging options are more advanced than ever before

Although laminate is your most affordable option, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t also your best one! This technology has come a long way, and these products are able to meet all the needs of the most demanding homeowners – from their aesthetic look (which can include granite, marble, natural wood and more), to their incredible durability. They are easy to maintain, very hygienic and easy to install – which also saves you labor costs. So, it’s not difficult to see why they make the perfect countertop for any home!

What countertop edge profiles are best for a modern kitchen?

If you want a kitchen that looks and feels very modern, you need to make sure that every aspect fits in with your vision – including your countertop edges. Here are some helpful tips from the leaders in countertop edge profiles.

  • Choose quality: Modern kitchens are all about minimalism, efficiency and practicality, so you need an edge option that will give you a look that lasts without wearing, chipping or peeling. For this, it’s best to go with independent laminate edge specialists rather than the standard offerings from your laminate manufacturer, as we have invested in the time, technology and expertise needed to develop a truly high quality product.
  • Avoid the ‘brown line’: Standard laminate countertop edges often mean dealing with an unsightly brown line at the join between the countertop and the edge. This will stand out in a modern kitchen and distract from your overall aesthetic. Professionally manufactured edges will fit seamlessly against your countertop, removing that brown line permanently.
  • Clean edges: Clean, simple lines are part of the foundation of a modern look, and this is no different in the kitchen. Single or double beveled edges and straight edges are the best profiles for these spaces, as they give a crisp and attractive accent to the room.
  • Consistency: While we can customize our edging to suit any look, we’ve found that the best results for modern kitchens focus on consistency – using matching materials and designs on all countertops within the space. Fortunately, we work with all the big laminate countertop manufacturers, so we can match your countertops and edging perfectly, whatever you choose.

Inside the laminate countertop and edging installation process

One of the best things about choosing laminate countertops for your home is the quick and easy – and inexpensive – installation process. Here’s how it works, from your specialists in laminate countertop edging.

  • Step One: Measuring. This is the most important part of the process, as incorrectly measured countertops will be a disaster. Your contractor will come through to your home and take down the floor plan and dimensions of your cabinets, as well as measure for appliances, sinks and so forth.
  • Step Two: Out with the old. On installation day, your countertops will arrive complete with your custom laminate edge, if you have chosen that option. Your old countertops will now be removed, which can be a messy job. Your cabinets will then be prepared for the new countertops by installing buildup strips to ensure a level, secure fit.
  • Step Three: Scribing for the best fit. This is the method your installer will use to ensure you get the best fit between your countertops and the walls, especially in corners. This includes shaving down the countertop in places where the wall is uneven. While this may look like a messy job, it’s essential to getting great looking countertops and the smallest, neatest joins.
  • Step Four: Attach the countertop. Now the installer can position and fix your countertops in place. This involves gluing and bolting the countertops down, and calking joints. At this point, your backsplash will also be fixed in place.
  • Step Five: Sinks. Using the sink you want installed, your installer will trace and cut its shape out of the laminate using a jigsaw. They will then place the sink in and seal around the edges to ensure no water can get into the laminate.

Maintenance-free marble? Laminate kitchen countertops are the answer

For many interior designers and homeowners, marble is the ultimate kitchen countertop. But there are downsides to living with this classic, elegant stone. While the price is exorbitant, the practical use of this stone for such a high-use area of your kitchen is even more of a problem. This stone very porous, so it soaks up liquids like wine, oil and other spills quickly – leaving stains that are difficult or even impossible to remove. It can also scratch easily, and edges have been commonly known to chip or even break off entirely. However, laminate countertops may offer you the best alternative to real marble – find out why from the experts in kitchen countertop edges.

  • Innovative design technology: The ability to accurately render the unique look of marble in full, realistic definition has been developed by leading manufacturers, which makes it a great alternative to the real thing. If you have your doubts as to how it measures up, check out the showrooms of laminate countertop manufacturers and see for yourself how amazing they look.
  • Affordability: Laminate and marble are at opposite ends of the scale as far as cost is concerned. While marble can set you back as much as $250 per square foot, the most expensive laminates are available for around $30 per square foot. The installation costs are also significantly lower, making laminate a great choice for anyone who wants to free up money in their budget for other areas of the kitchen while still getting that luxurious marble look.
  • Durability: Their ability to last through the decades is one of the most striking features of these countertops. They are easy to maintain with mild household cleaners, are non-porous for hygiene and stain resistance, are heat resistant and (while you should not cut directly onto the laminate) are impressively scratch resistant.

No more brown line with top-of-the-line laminate countertop edges

For a long time, one of the biggest marks against investing in laminate countertops for your home was the fact that no matter how affordable they were, good they looked or long they lasted, you’d have to live with that brown seam between the countertop and the edging. But not anymore! Here’s more from the specialists in manufacturing top quality laminate countertop edges.

Expertly manufactured laminate edges

Thanks to advancements in technology, design and manufacturing, specialists have found a way to get rid of that brown line for once and for all, leaving you with a seamless, high quality finish. Not only is the brown line a thing of the past, these new edges are stronger and more durable than before, protecting your countertops from chipping, moisture and damage.

Removing the seam also makes laminate countertops even more hygienic by removing that small gap where moisture, dirt and other materials can collect. This effectively prevents the risk of old, mildew and bacteria growth, which is especially vital in areas where food is prepared.

Add style as well as durability and strength

Edges are also no longer offered just in the standard styles from the countertop manufacturer. Design specialists can now offer you far more, including single and double beveled edges, ogee, bullnose and eased edges. You can also choose from a wide range of materials, from matching or contrasting laminate, to sustainable wood edges, solid surface edges and combination edges using a range of materials.

A style guide to countertop edge options

Choosing custom edging for your bathroom, workspace or kitchen countertops is a great way of adding additional style and durability to your remodel. Here’s how to choose the right look for your space, from the specialists in the manufacturing of top quality, affordable countertop edge options.

Different type of countertop edging options

  • Eased edges: This is a very simple and streamlined look for countertops that is ideal for homeowners who want a more neutral look rather than a statement. Essentially, it is a clean, straight, squared off edge that has had the sharp corners ground down at a slight angle to soften the edge and prevent chipping as well as painful bumps. It goes well with both traditional and modern spaces, making it eye-catching and versatile.
  • Beveled edges: Available as a single or double beveled edge, this style is very popular with people looking for a contemporary feel. It is a squared off look where the edges have been ground down at a 45-degree angle to create a slightly softer profile. You can choose from a single or double beveled profile to see what suits your space the best.
  • Bullnose edges: This is a fully rounded edge that has become a countertop classic. It complements any design and it’s easy to clean as well as child safe, due to its lack of sharp edges and angles. You can also get a demi-bullnose edge that is rounded on the top but still retains a sharp bottom edge for a more contemporary look.
  • Ogee edges: This is a far more detailed look that makes it suit spaces with a traditional feel to them. It has a double curve that adds elegance and personality, but can make cleaning your countertop edges slightly more challenging. This kind of edging is ideal for adding decorative detail and character to your space.
