Installing a sink in your laminate countertops

Traditional kitchen sinks have to be recessed into your countertop. Here’s some DIY installation advice from specialist manufacturers of laminate countertop edging.

Step One: Plan your sink installation

First, check with your sink manufacturer to see if they will supply a cutting template along with your sink. If they don’t, you can make one yourself by setting the sink face down on the countertop and marking it out with a pencil, making sure the space at the front and back of the sink is even. Then, measure the lip of the sink and mark that inner guide line within your pencil outline.

Note that it’s best to install your faucets and waste to the sink or countertop before the sink is secured in place.

Step Two: Cut the recess hole

Using a drill with an auger or flat bit, drill a hole in each corner of the sink position inside the inner guide line. Keep the drill at a precise right angle to the countertop for accuracy.

Using a jigsaw, cut around the inside guide line, using the corner holes as starting points. Once you have made the hole, rest the sink inside it to see if it fits properly. Once you are happy with the fit, seal the cut edges of the countertop with a preservative primer.

Step Three: Assembly

Remove the sink from the hole and install faucets, waste assembly and overflow as per the instructions from your manufacturer. Once they are installed securely, caulk around the hole in the countertop to seal against moisture, or place the manufacturers gasket or seal around the edge if they have supplied one.

Install the retaining clips around the sink edge and position the sink to ensure that you have enough access to connect the faucets to the water supply. Once you are happy with the position of the sink, tighten the retaining clips and wipe away any access sealant, and connect the faucets.

Can laminate countertops be painted?

The short answer to this question is yes, laminate countertops can be painted. However, the more important question is: should they? Here’s what the specialist manufacturers of laminate edging options have to say on the topic.

First, it is important to recognize the qualities that make laminate countertops so great. Firstly, they’re affordable at around $30 including installation, which makes them very accessible to most remodeling budgets. Secondly, they are very heat and scratch resistant, so they are up to the task of even the busiest home kitchens. They are also very hygienic and easy to maintain, because they are non-porous and resistant to bacteria.

Now, while there are products on the market that can be applied to laminate to change or disguise the design, these products cannot offer the same results as laminate – simply because you will be comparing a paint product to a compressed and sealed composite wood product.

The paint can be scratched by knives and scorched by hot pots and pans, leaving cracks and dents where water and food debris can collect, becoming a risk for bacteria growth. This will make them less hygienic and more difficult to maintain going forward. While even old laminate countertops can offer you years of use, painted countertops may be more work than you bargained for.

A better solution would be to invest in new laminate countertops. Thanks to advanced technology, there are more designs than ever before, including ultra-realistic marble, natural stone and wood. They can be installed directly onto your old countertops and you can further enhance them with customized laminate edge options that offer additional durability and an updated look.

Make your Formica countertops look like high-end luxury with these edge options

Thanks to ultra-realistic imaging and design technology, Formica countertops are leading the way as the go-to countertop option for homeowners wanting a high-end look and durability without the high-street price tag. However, there’s always been one factor that has lagged behind: laminate countertop edge options. Until now, that is.

Specialist manufacturers like Kuehn Bevel have taken on this challenge and, with the help of advanced manufacturing technology, offer consumers a wide range of countertop edge options that can be completely customized to your home. Not only do these edges deliver an aesthetically pleasing result, they also fit seamlessly to your countertop to add additional protection and durability. Some of the most popular options include:

  • Beveled edge: This is an edge that gives your space an updated look. A sheer, clean finish is softened by having the top and/or bottom edges ground down at a slight angle. This is a great way of keeping a modern, edgy look while making it more child-friendly.
  • Eased edge: This is like a beveled edge except that the edges are rounded off rather than kept at an angle. This look is great for a softer, natural aesthetic like a wooden or granite like laminate.
  • Solid surface: This creates a distinctive edge to your countertop that is highly durable and eye-catching. It is available in Corian and Formica, amongst others, and can be matched or contrasted to your countertops.
  • Wood: Natural woods add warmth to your space, and our edging can be made in different profiles (for example, beveled edges) as well as incorporating the laminate of your choice through a stylish insert in the panel. The wood types we offer include oak, maple and cherry.

What makes the perfect countertop?

With so many options for your kitchen countertop, from materials to colors and designs, choosing the right product for your home is a serious challenge. Here are some tips from specialist manufacturers of countertop edges to help make your decision a little easier.

Price and need

These are the two biggest factors in choosing the right kitchen countertop. For example, you may need a countertop that will last a long time and withstand a lot of use, as well as being easy to keep hygienic and in good condition. Your budget, however, will limit how many of your needs can be met and to what extent.

Tips for buying a kitchen countertop

As wonderful as it would be to spend $100,000 on a kitchen remodel, that’s just not an option for most of us, so budgeting for each part of the kitchen is essential. A standby rule is to set aside at least 10% of your budget for the countertops. This will give you a price range that you can work within that will determine if you can afford high-cost materials like marble, medium range materials like granite or Corian, or more affordable countertops like laminate.

Laminate countertops and edging options are more advanced than ever before

Although laminate is your most affordable option, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t also your best one! This technology has come a long way, and these products are able to meet all the needs of the most demanding homeowners – from their aesthetic look (which can include granite, marble, natural wood and more), to their incredible durability. They are easy to maintain, very hygienic and easy to install – which also saves you labor costs. So, it’s not difficult to see why they make the perfect countertop for any home!
